They beat a man to death in front of a bar, five men get nine to fifteen years in prison

On May 26, 2019, for a futile reason, a group of men started beating up a fifty-year-old in a bar in Toulouse. Seriously injured after being beaten up, he died. On Thursday, the five men involved were sentenced by the Haute-Garonne Assize Court to sentences ranging from 9 to 15 years in prison.

Aged between 23 and 30, they were all found guilty of “violence in a meeting resulting in death”. Sentences ranging from 8 to 15 years’ imprisonment had been requested against the five men.

“We are relieved that justice has been done,” reacted after the verdict Virginie Belacel, the lawyer for the victim’s family. For the defender of one of the accused, Me Nicolas Raynaud De Lage, these convictions are “sentences of homicidal intent, when there was no intention to kill”.

Bar managers sentenced

During this trial, the couple managing the bar had also been tried for “failure to assist a person in danger”. At the time of the facts, they had drawn the curtain of the establishment after having expelled the group. And did not notify the police when the 53-year-old man was violently beaten. They were given 12 and 18 month suspended prison sentences.
