Mass tourism is back. Popular metropolises, coastal towns and beaches, which were already suffering from the rush of visitors before the pandemic, are now at least as crowded as before Corona. The desire to travel has been awakened again: in a survey conducted by the travel portal Booking.com among 24,000 participants from 32 countries at the end of last year, 41 percent stated that vacation was at the top of their list of priorities. In many holiday destinations, the well-known conflict between economic profit and nature conservation, or the quality of life of the locals, is boiling up again. While tourists in big cities cause garbage, congested streets and high prices, when it comes to natural attractions, it is often the entire ecosystem that suffers from the masses of holidaymakers. Even before the pandemic, some holiday destinations such as Thailand or the Greek island of Santorini implemented measures intended to limit or at least regulate the flow of tourists.
