These are the most fascinating wrecks in the world – discarded and left behind

They have long since served their time and are living a rusty existence: wrecks. Once the means of transport were at the height of their time, but the date of commissioning was decades ago.

The formerly mobile vehicles have now become lost places, attractions for photographers and people looking for adventure. These abandoned remnants are fascinating because behind every object there is a story that stimulates the imagination or that one would like to get to know.

Historian Chris McNab has compiled the most interesting wrecks in the book “Wrecks – discarded and left behind“, which has now also been published in German by Geramond.

More than 200 fascinating wreck photos

The author has divided the collection of more than 200 photographs and explanations into the chapters Ships, Railways, Military Vehicles, Road Vehicles and Airplanes. McNab studied history and literature at Aberystwyth University in Wales. He has published more than 20 books, including on military history, which have been translated into numerous languages.

As we leaf through the illustrated book, we travel to ship cemeteries, theaters of war in Kuwait, or underwater to wrecks slumbering on the seabed.

Not all references are up to date. Two double pages are dedicated to the Canfranc train station in the Spanish Pyrenees on the border with France. But the imposing station building is no longer in ruins, but has been extensively renovated in recent years and wagons standing around have been saved from decay.

On the pages of the photo series above we show a selection of wreck photos from the volume.
