In many parts of Brazil, the lights went out in the morning. The reason was a widespread power failure. The power supply has now been restored in the south and mid-west of the country.

There have been power outages in large parts of Brazil. The capital district Brasília and at least 18 states were affected, as reported by the Brazilian news portal “G1”, citing the national electricity network operator ONS.

According to this, in the morning there was an “incident” on the north-southeast connection of the national network system, which affected residents and public facilities. For example, in Salvador da Bahia in the northeast, the traffic lights went out and the subway had to be evacuated. The metro also stopped in the economic metropolis of São Paulo in the southeast.

power supply gradually restored

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the power supply for the residents of the regions in the south, south-east and mid-west of Brazil was fully restored during the morning. In the northern regions this would be done gradually. About 16,000 megawatts of power had previously failed, it said. Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira has ordered an investigation into the cause.

The coordinator of the National Center for Monitoring and Warning for Natural Disasters, José Marengo, had previously assumed that the blackout was operational because there was no warning of a drought that could affect energy production and distribution. Brazil generates a large part of its electricity from renewable energies, mainly hydroelectric power.
