There is now advertising on Amazon Prime Video… unless you pay (a little) more

It was announced at the end of February 2024, but that won’t stop some from complaining: since this morning, French users of Amazon Prime Video have seen advertising land on their favorite streaming platform!

Amazon has also started to remind some of its subscribers of this “new feature” – already activated in the United States – by email, reports Numerama.

More money for better programs?

Amazon declares that it has made this decision to be able to “continue to invest in attractive content” and promises to broadcast “significantly fewer advertisements than traditional linear television and other streaming services” (Netflix offers, for example, a subscription plan at a reduced price through the appearance of advertisements).

Obviously, nothing obliges subscribers who do not wish to see their films or series interrupted by advertising screens: an option at 1.99 euros per month (i.e. 23.88 euros per year) will allow them to find their Prime Video without advertising, underlines Numerama.

France (alas) a pioneer in Europe

For the moment, only France is affected in Western Europe. But there is no doubt that this will not last forever, with Amazon specifying that “customers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will not see advertisements in their experience… for the moment”.

The Web giant’s stated objective is to position itself in the advertising market for video-on-demand content, which is expected to increase in the years to come. The recent arrival of TF1 + and M6 + in streaming is proof of this.
