11:14 a.m .: Ukrainians train in survival and how to handle weapons

In a forest near Kiev, a group of Ukrainians practice digging shelters in the snow: while others practice weapons, they learn survival techniques for fear of a Russian invasion. “If Russia attacks, it will be very important to know these techniques”, sums up computer scientist Artem Kouzmenko, 29, who is taking part in this two-day training. Online training that has already generated 4,000 registrations.

“People in the big cities had gotten used to the fact that the conflict was far from them,” said instructor Serguiï Vyshnevski, wrapped up in military fatigues. “They realize now that war could come to them.”

According to a poll released last week, 48% of Ukrainians believe a Russian invasion is possible and a growing number of formations are preparing them for the worst. In Kiev, around 300 people came to take part in military training at the beginning of the week on the territory of an abandoned factory. The action is organized by a nationalist party created by former volunteers engaged against the separatists in the east of the country.
