There are fewer and fewer cattle in Bavaria, most cows live in the south – Bavaria

The number of dairy cows and other cattle continues to decline in Bavaria – there are still particularly many animals in the south of Bavaria: These are the results of the cattle population survey by the State Office for Statistics. As the authority announced on Monday in Fürth, as of November 3, 2023, just over 2.8 million cattle lived on 39,113 farms in the Free State. That is 2.2 percent fewer animals and 1.8 percent fewer farms compared to the previous year.

The district with the most cattle is Ostallgäu – with 128,384 animals, followed by the districts of Rosenheim (127,532), Unterallgäu (122,552) and Traunstein (103,283). According to the state office, the number of farms with dairy cows is falling sharply: there is a decline of 3.8 percent in keeping numbers.

Overall, dairy cows make up 37.7 percent of the total cattle population in Bavaria. Many farms in Lower Bavaria and Middle Franconia in particular gave up keeping dairy cows.
