The Bremen cultural summer starts at the weekend with a new concept. The first shows and concerts are in Knoops Park and in “Somewhere” at the airport. Our highlights.

Theater, acrobatics, literature, vaudeville and music, as well as a range of program items for the whole family: the organizers of the Bremen Summer of Culture Summarum are again relying on a large stylistic mix in the fourth year of the open-air event. While in previous years the festival took place in many different places and days in front of a rather small audience due to the Corona rules, this time the cultural summer will take place at four central locations and on two weekends (July 7th and 8th and August 11th). . and 12 August).

“Four days – four places – four directions” is also the motto behind the new concept. It starts in the north of Bremen, more precisely: in Knoops Park, and in the south of the city, in “somewhere” at the airport. These are our tips for the first weekend of the Bremen cultural summer:

1 Frederick the magician

At the start of the cultural summer, the children get their money’s worth: Friedrich the magician tells stories in his own way, namely with his magic wand and all sorts of tricks, about funny egg-laying chickens, about a coloring book that loses the pictures or even about a golden dice who escapes from a locked safe.

But with Friedrich the magician there is not only a lot to look at. The children can also take part in his show. He will be performing on Friday from 4 p.m. in the “Irgenwo” cultural space at the airport (Amelie-Beese-Strasse 8).

2 Capoeira Dandara

Capoeira masters from several cultural associations have developed a joint performance for anyone interested in Afro-Brazilian culture and the Brazilian martial arts Capoeira: a musical and dance performance in equal measure. The audience can expect singing and instrumental music on traditional instruments, as well as combative and artistic interludes and various dances, including maculelle, samba de roda and samba reggae.

Initiated by the Association for Afro-Brazilian Arts and Culture, this show begins on Friday at 5:35 p.m. at “Irgenwo”. But you can also admire them on Saturday at 4.30 p.m. in Knoops Park.

3 AMS! theatre

The AMS! Theater has systematically shifted to an art form that other artists tend to cultivate only involuntarily: the art of improvisation. The players pick up a word from the audience in order to systematically dissect it and develop stories from it. In the end, at least according to the plan, these stories should fit together like the pieces of a mosaic, the ensemble promises.

The AMS! Theater performs in Knoops Park on Saturday at 5.30pm.

4 Rap opera “Demarchy”

The group
Rap opera and satire format at the same time: Things get wild in “Demarchie”.

The Bremen satirist Peer Gahmert, author of “Demarchie”, describes the piece as a “through-composed satirical rap opera in three acts with an overture for three performers”. Dan Eckert composed the music for it. The ensemble Unperform plays.

The story takes place in a fictional kingdom. Resentment, money and environmental problems make life difficult for people. Then the regent dies. A new era is dawning. The heir to the throne abolishes the monarchy. From one day to the next, people live in a “demarchy”. This means that everyone must expect to be drawn into the newly created parliament by lottery or even to have to govern the state. This performance lasts about an hour. The play is suitable for everyone over the age of 12. “Younger people will have fun too, but may not be able to follow the storyline,” the ensemble said.

The “Demarchy” can be seen on Saturday from 7.40 p.m. in “Irgendwo”.

The originally Indian, now international dance ensemble “D4Dance” based in Munich is one of the guest stars of the Bremen cultural summer. It tours Europe with several stage shows. At the Bremen Summer of Culture, it marks the end of the first weekend in “somewhere”.

At the dance show in Bremen, the ensemble focuses on Bollywood dance as it is known from Indian musicals and productions in the Bollywood, Tollywood and South Indian film industries. Following this show, which starts at 9.45pm on Saturday, DJ G-one aims to provide suitable Bollywood touches and get the audience dancing.
