The wall of shame in Lima, the doc in 2 minutes

In Lima, a 10-kilometer long wall separates the wealthiest neighborhoods of the capital from the slums. It is nicknamed the “wall of shame” because it reflects the social and economic inequalities that fracture the country.

In just 50 years, the population of the city of Lima has multiplied by 10. With demographic pressure, slums have been created near the richest neighborhoods of the city. These are habitats made from salvaged materials that are built on hillsides on muddy and unstable soils. They have no access to running water or electricity.

In the 1980s, residents of neighboring wealthy neighborhoods called for a wall to be built to separate them from the slums in order to guarantee their safety. In 2023, Peru’s constitutional court ordered the destruction of a small part of the wall. A decision which places the “wall of shame” and the strong economic and social disparities at the heart of the Peruvian public debate.
