“Your photos are like a tender hand that touches people’s souls. Our films are like a hand clenched into a fist.” In a letter to her “colleague” Claudia Andujar, a young indigenous filmmaker draws a line from the work of the photographer, who became known for her images of the Yanomami people, to her own work: around fifty years after Andujar’s poetic, sensitive portraits, the indigenous women take the camera into their own hands to convict illegal loggers or to denounce the poisoning of their territory with mercury.
