The university cancels a Mélenchon conference due to risk of public order disturbances

The University of Bordeaux announced on Wednesday the cancellation of a conference by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, due to “risks of disturbances to public order”, a little less than a year after the disruption of an intervention by two LFI deputies by the far right on another campus in the city.

“Faced with the proven risks of disturbances to public order, attacks on the security of people and property, and the extent of the security means required, the University of Bordeaux took the decision last Friday October 6 to cancel the holding of this event on its premises” scheduled for this Wednesday evening, specifies the faculty in a press release without specifying the nature of these risks.

The faculty would have received “a lot of far-right threats” according to LFI

The cancellation was pronounced before the controversy arising from the reaction of La France insoumise to the Hamas attack against Israel. According to LFI, the faculty made this decision after receiving “many threats from the extreme right”.

Last December, around twenty hooded individuals armed with iron bars attempted to interrupt a conference of two LFI deputies, Louis Boyard and Carlos Martens Bilongo, on another campus in the city, that of Bordeaux Montaigne University. .

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s conference was rescheduled for Wednesday evening in another location in the city, with less capacity.
