The polls predicted him a score of 58%. They were hardly wrong. Laurent Wauquiez was reelected Sunday evening at the head of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in favor of a triangular, with 55.17% of the votes. A plebiscite in the ballot box that must however be put into perspective in view of the very low participation (66.6%), a record in terms of abstention. Laurent Wauquiez as boss
The re-election of the Republican candidate will have been only a formality as the president of the region has crushed the competition. The score, recorded in the first round (43.8%) left little doubt about the outcome. Sunday evening, Laurent Wauquiez however paid the luxury of improving it by nearly 12 points. More than one in two voters, who went to the polls, slipped a ballot in their favor in the voting booth. This is much more than in 2015, when the former mayor of Puy-en-Velay had delighted the region to the left by collecting 40.6% of the polls, still in favor of a triangular.

Easily returned to his chair, Laurent Wauquiez now takes on another dimension on a national scale. Banned from the right for his sometimes very contested ideas, the Auvergnat signs a shattering return to the French political landscape. The Greens do not convert the test
If the ecologists now impose themselves as the first of the forces of the left, they however fail to transform the trial of the municipal ones. Fabienne Grebert, who had forged an alliance with Najat Vallaud-Belkacem (PS) and Cécile Cukierman (LFI-PC) for the second round, achieves roughly the mathematical score (33.65%) that the merger of the three lists could generate . Whatever the main concern says, the dynamic has not really worked. Voters were hardly more mobilized than in the first round. The left as a whole is left behind by more than 22 points by Laurent Wauquiez. She even achieves a score lower than that of the socialist Jean-Jack Queyranne in 2015 (36.34%).
The collapse of the RN
The counter-performance of the evening is to be put to the credit of Andrea Kotarac. The candidate of the National Rally, who had no pool of votes, won 11.18% of the vote, slightly less than in the first round (12.3%). He himself observed bitterly that “young people, workers and popular categories” had not come to the polls. One thing is certain: after the municipal elections, the extreme right confirms that it is losing ground. A figure to support it: the score recorded, Sunday evening in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is two times lower than that of 2015. As a reminder, Christophe Boudot had at the time collected 22.55% of the votes.
