The Terra Nova “think tank” offers avenues to fight against dropping out of young people

Massive deployment of digital learning for flexible distance learning: the think tank Terra Nova launches leads in a report published Wednesday to fight against the dropout of young people affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

“The paradox of the pandemic is that young people will have been both physiologically the most protected against the virus and socially the most exposed to the economic devastation it has engendered”, it is written in this report entitled “Acting for success young people in difficulty ”.

“The specter of a” Covid generation “is very present”, deplore the authors, Olivier Faron, of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts and Marc-François Mignot Mahon, president of Galileo Global Education, a European leader in higher education private.

“The pandemic has come to reinforce already sensitive difficulties: 13.5% of young people aged 15 to 29 are neither in studies, nor in employment, nor in training”, they note, citing a study of the released INSEE in March. The risk of dropping out is increased by “the difficulties experienced by young people in training during confinement”.

Terra Nova, a “think tank” close to the center left, pleads for “an increased training effort” for these young people, as close as possible to them, “in their territories”, thanks to digital technology.

“Putting young people who have experienced failures during their initial training in a situation of success in a company, it is not only possible but desirable because the facilitating levers exist”, estimate the authors. The first is apprenticeship, “for which there are still many development margins”.

“Boot camp methodologies”

During the crisis, learning has changed dramatically, underlines Terra Nova. “Many apprenticeship training centers have gone from 0% to 100% distancing”. “The digitization of training now makes it possible to create classes everywhere, as close as possible to the needs of businesses and the homes of learners,” say the authors.

“The Covid crisis has accelerated digitization. We may have won 10 to 15 years, ”assured Marc-François Mignot Mahon. “We now know how to run an online hairdressing school, as efficient as it is face-to-face,” he notes. Terra Nova also emphasizes “boot camp methodologies” or intensive classes, in order to provide young people with useful skills in a few days or weeks as soon as they enter the company.

The authors also plead for business groups, so that a young person can do his apprenticeship in several companies. “It is in times of crisis, when resources are scarce, that it is most necessary to invest in training, the only real anti-unemployment pill,” says Terra Nova.
