Use as a cultural forum
Mayor Octavian Ursu (CDU) advertises the Görlitz synagogue as one of the most beautiful in all of Germany for the newly restored monument. The renovation cost around 12.6 million euros. The Star of David on the dome should also shine again by the end of the year. The parishioners donated 70,000 euros for his return. In the small weekday synagogue, there will be services again in the future. Otherwise, the synagogue, as a cultural forum with events, should be a meeting place.
We would also be very happy if the building was used extensively beyond the borders, including on the Polish side.
The synagogue was consecrated in 1911. At that time, around 600 Jewish citizens lived in Görlitz. Fortunately, the Art Nouveau building was only slightly damaged during the pogrom night, and a fire was extinguished in good time. But the community had to disband in 1939 and many members died in the extermination camps. In the 1960s, the synagogue became the property of the city and fell into disrepair.
Rescue through private engagement
After the fall of the Wall, she was also saved by the commitment of a development association. In 1990 the ailing roof was first renovated and the building, which was in danger of collapsing, was secured. After that, funding was fought for years. Private individuals, foundations, the federal government and the state as well as the city ultimately raised more than twelve million euros for the renovation.
