Public officials who died “in exceptional circumstances”, such as caregivers during the Covid-19 pandemic, will soon be honored with a special status, “Died for the service of the Republic,” Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday.

“I hope that we will give our recognition a solid foundation in the law, that we grant to public officials who died in exceptional circumstances in the service of the common good a specific statute, that of death for the service of the Republic, which allows to their sons, their daughters to become wards of the Republic “and thus benefit from” material and moral support to help them recover, “detailed the President of the Republic in a video posted on Twitter.

This status will concern, for example, those who “in the midst of a pandemic (of Covid-19) take care of the lives of others”, explained the Head of State, for whom its creation is “an act of justice, of fraternity”.

Also concerned are “recurring situations of death in service in circumstances beyond the normal provisions of labor law (death during rescue or rescue operations, accidents during training for soldiers, etc.)”, specifies the Elysee Palace. .

An amendment scheduled for next week

“The Republic owes a lot to those who serve it and even more to those who gave their lives for it. The children of caregivers who died during the pandemic will be wards of the Republic, as proposed by François Jolivet and LREM deputies a year ago, ”explained in a tweet Christophe Castaner, president of the LREM group to the National Assembly.

The LREM deputies had then passed a resolution to this effect. It will be translated into an amendment in the bill on the civil security model and the volunteering of firefighters on the menu of the National Assembly next week, according to parliamentary sources.

The mention “Death for the service of the Republic” will complete the mention “Death for France”, dedicated mainly to the deaths of soldiers who died in combat, and the mention “Death for the service of the Nation”, designed to recognize the commitment. personnel ensuring security missions and “victims of an aggression recognized as being an aggression against France, against the whole nation”, recalls the Elysee.
