When Dirk Altenkirch accompanied archaeological excavations in Qantir, Egypt, as a photographer in 1983, “Mumkin Sura?” an important sentence for him. In German it means: “May I take a photo of you?” The architectural photographer asked this question to people in Cairo and in the oases of the Western Desert, where he spent his free time while excavating.
The black and white photos that were taken are available from May 14th under the title “Mumkin Sura?” can be seen in the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich. At the same time, you can watch “Operation Finale: The Capture and Trial of Adolf Eichmann” until August 4th. The exhibition, which started in November, is being extended due to its success.
With almost 140,000 visitors, as director Arnulf Schlüter said at the 2024 annual press conference, last year was also extremely successful for the museum. The digital offering was also well received. The aim is to expand this further, for example by expanding the digital collection archive and digitally reconstructing fragmentary objects. The analog program also includes a children’s theater marathon in March. And in October, students from the August Everding Academy will be guests in the special exhibition room with a musical theater project. Further exhibitions, however, are not planned until 2025.
