Usually, passengers with boarding passes for flights to Bangkok, New York or Mauritius board the Austrian Airlines Boeing 777-200. On this Saturday, the airline based at Vienna-Schwechat Airport issued unusual boarding passes: “B 777 vaccination” was the travel destination.
“Welcome aboard Austrian Airlines. Thank you for choosing a vaccination appointment in our Boeing 777 and making an important contribution to combating the pandemic,” was the announcement. “The calculated flight time only takes a few minutes. The Austrian Airlines, Vienna Airport and Red Cross Lower Austria crew wish you a pleasant stay on board.”
Just one day before Österriech decided on the nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people, up to 300 people who wanted to be vaccinated turned up between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and wanted to get either the first, second or booster vaccination on board the machine. Registration was not required. The check-in for the vaccination appointment took place in the visitor world of Vienna Airport. Then it went by shuttle bus to the aircraft with the abbreviation OE-LPF.
300 doses of vaccine
On board, staff of the Lower Austria Red Cross vaccinated the “passengers”. 300 doses of the vaccine from Biontech-Pfizer were available for the public campaign.
“We will only get this pandemic under control with the vaccination,” said Julian Jäger, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG. “We too want to do our part to achieve a high vaccination rate and to leave this crisis behind us.”
In order to boost the vaccination motivation a bit, the home airline raffled off a flight for two people to New York City among those taking part in the vaccination campaign. The drawing should take place on Monday.
