INTERNATIONAL – They all wanted to enjoy the show. Millions of people gathered this Monday, April 8 to watch a rare total eclipse cross the northern part of the American continent, from Mexico to Canada through the United States, a spectacular celestial event temporarily plunging the day into darkness.

In city after city, the cries of amazed crowds followed NASA’s live video broadcast, broadcast from multiple locations along the path of the eclipse. You can see images of this total eclipse in the photos below, shared on social media.

The event began at 6:07 p.m. GMT (8 p.m. in France) on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was in the seaside city of Mazatlán, like thousands of others, where he welcomed a ” unforgettable day “.

The trajectory then crossed the 15 American states on the program – from Texas to Maine – before heading towards eastern Canada. In total, the Moon’s shadow moved over America in about an hour and a half.

The eclipse was also seen from space, as you can once again see in the images below.

Total eclipses occur when the Moon comes exactly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the light of our star in broad daylight. American authorities have been hammering out safety instructions for weeks, in particular the need to wear special glasses to look at the Sun, under penalty of serious eye damage.

The next total eclipse visible in the United States (excluding Alaska) will take place in 2044. Before that, a total eclipse will take place in Spain, in 2026.
