The region restores its subsidies to Sciences Po Grenoble

“It’s a return to normal,” praised Sciences Po Grenoble. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region announced on Tuesday that it would reinstate international mobility scholarships intended for students at the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies (IEP) which had been suspended at the end of 2022 following a controversy with the school over freedom of expression.

This announcement comes after the IEP signed the republican engagement contract, which “will make it possible to guarantee the eligibility of Sciences Po Grenoble for the various regional schemes, in particular the mobility grant scheme” which must be voted on in committee. permanent on February 9, the region said in a press release.

The republican engagement contract provided for as part of the August 2021 law on separatism and secularism has become mandatory for any structure requesting a public subsidy. The region suspended the granting of these scholarships in December 2022, a year after deciding to stop all of its funding and cooperation with Sciences Po Grenoble, following what it described as a “long drift ideological and communitarian of its leadership.”

At the time, the management of Sciences Po Grenoble regretted a “political” decision by the president of the region, Laurent Wauquiez. The latter was then criticized for budget cuts targeting cultural institutions in his region.
