In this summer competition which the British did not expect, the playoffs have begun. They were eight candidates to line up on the starting line to succeed Boris Johnson. At the end of the first day of voting to decide between them, there are only six left.
Former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and new Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi are eliminated, having failed to receive the necessary backing from 30 MPs to pass the first round. Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak took the lead with 88 votes, followed by Secretary of State for International Trade Penny Mordaunt (67 votes) and Foreign Minister Liz Truss (50 votes).
