The Plassenburg near Kulmbach: The ghost that scared Napoleon – Bavaria

If you’re looking for great horror, Harald Stark will have to disappoint you. The 58-year-old stands in the spacious inner courtyard of the Plassenburg, the fortress built into the rock on a hill above Kulmbach. The sun brightens the ornate Renaissance arcades, decorated with bearded sandstone faces, laurel wreaths and flower vases. It’s all quite worth seeing, there’s an idyllic calm about it. “But unfortunately we don’t have any scary corners,” says Stark. Which is certainly true by today’s standards.
