The “Oui pub” anti-waste system tested in 14 French cities

To fight against waste, we reverse the system. French people who no longer want unsolicited advertising will soon no longer have to come forward, while those who wish to receive it will have to indicate it in their mailbox. From this Thursday, the “Oui Pub” system will be tested in the first 11 municipalities, such as Bordeaux, or communities of municipalities such as Grenoble-Alpes-Métropole.

What to limit the waste of paper due to advertising flyers and make obsolete the “Stop pub” stickers introduced in 2004. The distribution of unaddressed printed advertising is prohibited from September 1, 2022 for 31 months, unless a sticker “Yes Pub” is visible on the mailbox.

A possible generalization after 2025

This experiment comes from the Climate and Resilience law of 2021. It partially takes up a proposal from the Citizens’ Convention for the Climate, which wanted to completely ban this type of advertising.

The experiment will last until 2025 and concerns 2.5 million people. After the test period, an evaluation committee will examine “the impact of the experiment on the production and treatment of paper waste, its consequences on employment, on the sectors of activity concerned, on the consumer behavior, but also on the possible difficulties of generalizing such a measure”, explains the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
