The approach is still a little undignified and resembles a hurdle run. Construction machinery roars and jackhammers rattle behind barricades; A subway is being built a few meters from Vienna’s Ostarrichi Park on Alserstrasse. At the entrance to the memorial for the “Jewish children, men and women from Austria murdered in the Shoah”, or Shoah wall of names for short, two workers are drilling the last holes in the stone. The trees in the complex are freshly planted, a cold wind is sweeping over the gravel. The memorial is due to open on November 9th on the square in front of the National Bank in Vienna, the Federal President, Federal Chancellor and members of the Israelite religious community have announced themselves. Then, at the latest, the excavators should be silent for a few hours.
