“Plumping treatment”, “volumizing gloss”, “3D effect lipstick”… Just by looking at the “lips” section in stores, we see that the trend is towards fuller lips. And some even sell it with humor. Like the Nyx brand, with its duck as an advertising logo (in reference to the duck mouth?) for its “extreme plumping” product, of which the singer Cardi B is the face.
Helped by this wave of marketing, the trend “ Lip cuffing » resurfaced on social networks and it was the make-up artist Huda Kattan, with 54 million followers, who quickly took hold of it, before in turn inspiring Internet users who reproduced her tutorial. Contacted by 20 minuteshis team, as well as other experts, explained to us the reasons for the craze around this trend, and more generally plumping products.
There is a fashion for wanting “fuller” lips
In 2024, there is clearly a trend for more defined and shiny lips. “But not everyone wants to resort to surgery to achieve this effect,” explains to 20 minutes, Nadia Fihema, training director at Huda Beauty. “Most of our customers are looking for a plumped effect, we offer alternatives,” she continues. By combining plumping products and makeup techniques, “lip cuffing” fits perfectly into current demand.
“In my practice, I see a trend toward wanting more natural, fuller lips. I think this is why brands are creating more and more lip products,” also notes Dr Denis Gross, who also offers his own lip plumping treatment.
The magic ingredient at the heart of these formulas: hyaluronic acid, among others. In addition to having plumper lips, you will also notice an improvement in the natural color of your lips and their long-term hydration, says the doctor.
The “lip cuffing” tutorial in five steps
Step 1. You have to start with a dark color to outline your lips. For this, training director Huda Beauty recommends using a dark brown pencil. Next, apply the color starting from the outer edges of the lips upwards, to define the cupid’s bow.
2nd step. Once the contours of the lips have been drawn, you must use a slightly warmer, lighter color to soften the dark shade and accentuate the “ombré” effect.
Step 3. Leave your pencil, and take a liquid corrector that you will apply to the center of the lip to add “dimension” to the mouth. Nadia Fihema recommends a peach color which “generally suits all skin tones”.
Step 4. Using a powder puff, set the concealer with a small amount of translucent powder. “Make sure you don’t have any residue on your lips,” before moving on to the next step, warns the professional.
Step 5. At this stage, the mouth already has more relief thanks to this kind of lip contouring. But “lip cuffing” adds its touch. You must now add the glossy plumping treatment or gloss of your choice to the center of the mouth only. Thanks to the active ingredients, the mouth gains volume and we obtain this “plumped” effect.
