The municipal police equipped with pedestrian cameras

A system deemed “useful” to ease tensions. The municipal police officers of Villeurbanne (Rhône) have just acquired pedestrian cameras, the town hall announced on Tuesday. Apparently worn, these cameras have a screen that can display live what is recorded and, therefore, the behavior of the agent’s interlocutors.

“In the event of an incident during an intervention, the images will make it possible to objectify the facts relating to the behavior of citizens as well as to those of agents. The device also makes it possible to improve the collection of evidence ”, argues the town hall specifying that the audio-visual recordings, apart from their use within the framework of a judicial, administrative or disciplinary procedure, will be“ automatically erased after six months ” .

30,000 cameras ordered by the Ministry of the Interior

The municipal police’s pedestrian camera equipment amounts to 10,488 euros paid for by the city, she adds. The system has already been tested in Toulouse since the fall of 2019 for an assessment deemed positive. But also in Strasbourg.

Last September, the Interior Ministry announced that it had ordered 30,000 cameras of this type from Motorola Solution contract for a contract of 15 million euros for a delivery scheduled “from July”. The deployment will be completed “by the end of September”.
