the most impressive foldable smartphone on paper

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its new foldable smartphone in China. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 has serious arguments against the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but a definite handicap.

With its Mix range, Xiaomi has wanted to show for several years that the brand is more than good value for money. This is to offer a real technological showcase capable of offering real innovations on the market in the same way as Samsung, Apple, Google or Huawei.

Naturally, this range of smartphones has recently turned to the foldable format. Xiaomi is changing its formula with the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3, a state-of-the-art foldable smartphone. The brand took the opportunity to announce the Pad 6 Max, the Smart Band 8 Pro and the CyberDog 2.

Thinner and a better screen?

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is a foldable smartphone in book format, like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 from Samsung. However, it differs from its competitor by interesting choices in terms of design and screen.

Xiaomi puts forward a proprietary hinge system certified to be folded up to 500,000 times, enough to largely cover the duration of use of the product before a renewal. Above all, the brand promises a thinness of only 5.26 mm when the device is unfolded, against 6.1 mm for Samsung.

The screen format also changes. Outside, there is a Samsung E6 Amoled screen of 6.56 inches with a definition of 2520 x 1080 pixels, against 6.2 inches and 2316 x 904 pixels. In other words, the Xiaomi’s external screen is wider and looks more like that of a classic smartphone.

This is felt on the internal Eco Oled Plus screen, also larger with a diagonal of 8.025 inches for a definition of 2160 x 1916 pixels.

For both displays, the display frequency rises to 120 Hz and the panel is certified Dolby Vision and HDR10 +. We should very logically be on one of the best display qualities in 2023.

The rest of the technique is at the level

For the rest, Xiaomi integrates a latest generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in its smartphone to ensure a good level of performance and control of consumption. With a 4800 mAh battery and 50 W wireless or 67 W wired charging, the phone should do well in autonomy.

On the photo side, we find broadly the same proposal as Samsung, while highlighting a close collaboration with Leica and greater versatility on the zoom. Here is the technical sheet of the photo module on the back.

  • 23mm equivalent wide-angle: 50MP IMX800 2.0µm sensor, f/1.77
  • 15mm equivalent ultra-wide-angle: 12MP, f/2.2
  • 75mm equivalent telephoto: 10MP, f/2.0
  • 115mm equivalent periscope: 10MP, f/2.92

On the front, the smartphone incorporates a 20 megapixel sensor, without further precision.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 finally runs Android 13 with the Miui Fold 14 interface.

A serious handicap

As always with Xiaomi on this impressive family of foldable smartphones: the device is not planned in France to date.

Several competitors make impressive demonstrations against Samsung, but the Korean manufacturer remains the only one to market its foldable smartphones in as many regions and in as many copies.

Hopefully Xiaomi will eventually release this Mix Fold 3 in Europe. In the meantime, know that it exists in three configurations. The model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage is at 8999 yuan (1136 euros HT approximately) while the 16/512 GB version is displayed at 9999 yuan (1262 euros HT approximately). Finally, the 1 TB version is announced at 10,999 yuan (approximately 1389 euros excluding tax).
