It was one of Johanna Rolland’s campaign commitments. On the sidelines of the presentation of the new Naolib mobility brand, Nantes Métropole announced on Friday that it was preparing to launch a study concerning the creation of a metro line. “It is not a technical feasibility study, specifies Bertrand Affilé (PS), vice-president of Nantes metropolis. First of all, it is a question of studying the opportunity of the metro, that is to say whether there is a potential for travelers for this mode of transport, given our network. In particular, it is necessary to look at what would happen to a line as busy as tram line 1, including during the works. »
The study, which will be carried out internally by the services of the metropolis, should reveal its results by 2026. Very hypothetical at this stage, the commissioning of a metro would not take place before the end of the 2030s. as soon as possible…
First the tram and the busway
The idea of a metro in Nantes has been defended for several years by an association of citizens. This collective imagined a 16.5 km line project with 19 stations. Estimated cost: between 1.5 and 2 billion euros. The metropolis of Bordeaux also launched an opportunity study in September for the creation of a metro.
As a reminder, Nantes Métropole plans to open three new transport lines on its own site in 2027: two tram lines linking La Chapelle-sur-Erdre and Saint-Herblain to Rezé, one busway linking Bouguenais to Nantes-Doulon.
