The Macronists satisfied by censorship, the right winds up, the left relieved

The presidential camp is satisfied, the left is relieved, the right and the far right are on a roll: here are the main political reactions to the decision of the Constitutional Council, which largely censored the immigration bill on Thursday.

Among the Macronists, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior judged that “the Constitutional Council [avait] valid[é] the entirety of the Government’s initial text: never has a text provided so many means for expelling delinquents and so many requirements for the integration of foreigners! The government takes note, as I was able to indicate during the debates, of the censorship of numerous articles added in Parliament, for non-compliance with parliamentary procedure. » One of the leaders of the “Macronist left wing”, Sacha Houlié, had voted against the text, he notes that the Constitutional Council “was faithful” to its jurisprudence.

“A coup from the judges”

Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally, sees in the decision of the Constitutional Council “a coup de force by the judges, with the support of the President of the Republic himself, the Constitutional Council censors the firmness measures most approved by the French: the immigration law is stillborn. The only solution is the referendum on immigration. » Éric Ciotti, president of the Republicans, believes that the wise men “judged in politics rather than in law. This censorship was expected by Emmanuel Macron and the left. A constitutional reform appears more essential than ever to safeguard the destiny of France! »

For Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France Insoumise, while “the Constitutional Council has just censored more than a third of the immigration law. […] The law is completely amputated. It has no legitimacy. It must be removed. » Mathilde Panot, leader of the LFI deputies, sees the decision as a “huge snub for Macron-Darmanin-Le Pen. » On the socialist side, Olivier Faure, expressed his “satisfaction after the decision of the Constitutional Council. The government will bear as an indelible stain the call to pass a law aligning with the historical positions of the far right under pressure from LR. »

Finally, among environmentalists, the national secretary of EELV, Marine Tondelier, national secretary of Ecologists, who sees the immigration law as “infamous”, “the fundamentals of our Republic [ont été] reminded of Macron and his government! A real lesson in the rule of law sent by the Council. We will continue to fight so that the law is not promulgated. »
