The “Lord of the Rings” series is considered the most expensive TV project of all time. From title to content: This is what fans need to know.

Ever since Amazon Prime Video announced it was producing a series based on JRR Tolkien’s fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, fans have been excited to hear any news about the project. The series is considered the most expensive TV show of all time. That is already known about it.

The title

Prime Video has just released the official title of the series: “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. The streaming service continues: “The title hints at an epic story that brings together the key events of Tolkien’s second age: the forging of the fabled rings.”

The content

So it’s about the creation of the rings – there were 20 in total – and about “the rise of the dark lord Sauron, the epic story of Númenor and the last alliance of Elves and Men”, as showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay already revealed: “Up until now, viewers have only seen the story of The One Ring on screen – but before there was one ring, there were many… and we’re excited to tell the epic tale of all of them.”

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” takes place in the second age in the history of Middle-earth. And thus thousands of years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”. In the prequel, Prime Video wants to resurrect an era “in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unexpected heroes were tested, hope hung by a thread and one of the greatest villains, the ever sprang from Tolkien’s pen threatened to engulf the whole world in darkness”.

The series begins in a time of relative peace and follows a cast of familiar and new characters as they confront the long-feared return of evil to Middle-earth. “From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic landscape of Lindon and the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after they die.”

The start of the series

The multi-season drama premieres September 2 on Prime Video in more than 240 countries in multiple languages. New episodes of the first season start weekly.

The locations

Filming for the first season continued in New Zealand until the summer of 2021. The second season will be produced in the UK. The series is considered the most expensive TV project of all time. Amazon reportedly paid $250 million to acquire the rights to the fantasy story. The streaming service is reportedly spending around $1 billion on the adaptation. Five seasons are said to be planned.

The actors

The main cast consists of Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers and Daniel Weyman.
