Born on October 11, 1937 in Ashington, England, Bobby Charlton quickly took his first steps on the football field. He joined Manchester United in 1953, quickly becoming an iconic figure at the club. His international career began in 1958, and he played for the England national team 106 times, scoring 49 goals, a record at the time.
However, it was with Manchester United that Charlton enjoyed his greatest success. He was a key part of the “Busby Babes” team under legendary manager Matt Busby. Unfortunately, in 1958 the team suffered an air tragedy in Munich, which claimed the lives of several of their teammates. Charlton survived the accident and became a symbol of resilience, returning to the field to win the European Cup in 1968, scoring a crucial goal in the final.

At club level, Charlton has also contributed to numerous successes, including three English league titles with Manchester United. His tally of 249 goals in 758 matches for the club remains a record. He was a versatile player, capable of playing in midfield or in attack, with exceptional ball striking and unparalleled game vision. In selection, his high point will remain the conquest of the 1966 World Cup with England, which allowed him to win the Ballon d’Or the same year.
After his retirement in 1973, Charlton continued to serve football as a coach and manager, including as technical director of the English Football Association. He was also knighted in 1994, becoming Sir Bobby Charlton, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport. Beyond his on-field exploits, Charlton was also known for his kindness, humility and dedication to charity. He devoted his life to humanitarian projects, notably supporting the victims of the Munich tragedy and working for the education of children around the world.
