The US streaming service HBO Max shows the first moving pictures of the post-apocalyptic zombie series “The Last of Us”.

At the beginning of next year, “The Last of Us”, an eagerly awaited video game adaptation, will be released on the US streaming service HBO Max. The series is based on the 2013 horror survival computer game of the same name. So far, HBO Max has only released a promo image for the show, but now there are the first scenes from the upcoming production. The 20-second teaser trailer comes at the end of a highlight clip that sets the mood for future series and seasons of the streaming service. The scenes begin approximately at minute 1:42.

After moments from HBO series such as “Succession”, “The White Lotus” and “The Idol”, the first moving images from “The Last of Us” come in the video. “The Mandalorian” star Pedro Pascal (47) embodies the survivor Joel. Bella Ramsey (18), known from the last three seasons of “Game of Thrones”, plays the second main character Ellie. Nick Offerman (52, “Pam & Tommy”) can also be seen in the video as Bill.

“The Last of Us” series: That’s what it’s all about

The story of “The Last of Us” takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. A mushroom turns people into bloodthirsty zombies. The video above also offers a brief glimpse of a wall overgrown by a mushroom structure. Several years after the fall of civilization, survivors Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) trek across a devastated America to find a cure for the fungal infection.

HBO Max series backgrounds

Chief writers and creators of the “The Last of Us” series are Craig Mazin (51, “Chernobyl”) and Neil Druckmann (43). Druckmann is the writer and creative director of the two previously released The Last of Us video games, and now serves as executive producer on the series adaptation of his work.

In an interview with IGN, he revealed last yearthat the HBO Max series will take some lines of dialogue directly from the game. Compared to the games, however, character development is more important than the action sequences. Smaller and larger details will also differ. For example, the main character Joel no longer wears a thick full beard and characters are invented for the series adaptation that do not appear in the original. Series creator Druckmann assured IGN that fans will be “surprised by large parts of the episodes”.
