What is and what does “Investigative Musical Theater” sound like? This is played and debated at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in the sideshow Tischlerei. Who sets the tone? This time not Aida, Carmen or the Bartered Bride. However, macho men like Sarastro, Wotan or Macbeth would have to fear investigative investigations and revelations at any time. “Beta” is the name of the “exploring” 100-minute piece, entangled in verbal and audio battles about AI, Silicon Valley billionaires, surveillance and civil rights, chock full of piles of research results about the digital future and the freedom of humanity. But can a musical theater make the dangers of the tech industry sing and say as operatically as the tragedy surrounding Pamina and Tamino? Attempts allowed.
