Samsung claims (via the news agency Yonhap) that its new generation of folding smartphones broke a record by recording 1.02 million pre-ordered units. For comparison, the company counted 970,000 on last year’s models.
In addition, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 represents 70% of the pre-orders in question. Surprise popularity? Not really. In 2022, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, its predecessor, also received an enthusiastic welcome.
Aesthetics takes precedence over practice?
How to explain such a success of the Flip against the Fold? First of all, the respective prices of the two smartphones are probably not for nothing: at least 1199 euros for the Flip 5 against 1899 euros for the Fold 5. A difference far from negligible.
We must also undoubtedly see there an attraction of the general public for smartphones whose main argument lies in the design and capable of establishing themselves as a real fashion item. Through Samsung’s numerous advertisements and the brand’s efforts to associate its product with beloved celebrities (such as members of BTS, the K-pop group), the Galaxy Z Flip 5 succeeds. a priori to take on this role.
For its part, the Fold 5 seems to mainly speak to people more geek or very focused on productivity. It has more the image of a technological showcase that is still not very accessible.
