The impressive Belharra wave leads to the closure of the Corniche road

An impressive spectacle, which only takes shape when certain conditions are met, and which attracts many curious people each time. Awakened from its slumber, the Belharra wave, which can reach several meters high, hit the coast of the Basque Country between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye on Monday.

“The Belharra wave could be observed off the Corniche road, confirms the Pyrénées-Atlantiques prefecture, and a certain number of people went to the Corniche path to observe it. Problem: “The cliffs near the Corniche road are particularly sensitive to erosion, with real risks of collapse”, recalls the prefecture, which therefore took the decision to close the road to traffic until See you on Wednesday.

A collapse two years ago

A collapse of the cliff, at the place of observation of the wave, had notably occurred on October 29, 2020, a few hours after the passage of the wave. An event that had no casualties.

It is also forbidden to park on the Corniche road. “Unauthorized parking poses a risk to the road safety of users. Calling for everyone’s vigilance, the prefecture indicates that it also proceeded to verbalizations on Monday.
