The hottest autumn 2023 recorded in France since 1900

The fall of 2023 “will be the hottest ever recorded since 1900”, according to the climate report for the year 2023, presented Thursday at Météo-France headquarters in Toulouse by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu.

“With the warmest month of September, the month of October in 2nd place and a still mild month of November, the fall of 2023 will be the hottest ever recorded since 1900, ahead of the falls of 2006 and 2022,” explains Météo- France in its balance sheet.

2023, record year

Beyond autumn, the whole year of 2023 risks entering the second warmest years known in France since 1900, after 2022. “The thermal anomaly for 2023 should be around + 1.3°C (compared to 1991 – 2020 normals)”, specifies the organizationdriven in particular by particularly high summer temperatures which “stretched in length, from June to mid-October, with several late hot episodes”.

In terms of drought, however, there is improvement. Météo-France thus notes that after an “extremely dry year 2022, the average rainfall over the year 2023 is close to normal, with nevertheless strong contrasts between seasons and regions. »
