One of the most successful Japanese comic series is about 17-year-old Ryota, a basketball fanatic who goes to Shohoku High School and plays on the school team. The illustrator and author of this series called “Slam Dunk”, Takehiko Inoue, formerly of his university’s basketball club, published the stories about Ryota between 1990 and 1996 in a popular manga magazine. The sport is said to have experienced a boom in Japan afterwards, and the comic became a legend.
