The Financial Crisis of Private Radios: The Problem with Diversity – Media

The corona crisis is not over for private radio stations in Germany: The industry’s advertising revenues fell from 844 million euros in 2019 to 778 million euros in 2020. Since then, income has been increasing again, but is still below the pre-corona level. Most recently, in 2022, private radio operators took in 814 million euros. In connection with increased energy prices, which have an impact on the operation of the transmitters, as well as the high inflation in general, a number of transmitters are under severe financial pressure.
