The executive is working on a revaluation of mayors’ allowances

Indemnities not attractive enough for the government. The Minister Delegate for Local Authorities, Dominique Faure, is therefore considering an “evolution” of the compensation for mayors in order to bring it “to the height” of their “commitment” and to fight against their “discouragement”

“The compensation paid to elected officials is not sufficient for a certain number of mayors who are obliged to work in parallel. Nothing is simple when you are a mayor today and there is a form of discouragement”, maintains the minister in an interview published Friday evening by the newspapers of the Ebra group (Progress, the JSLetc.).

2,200 euros to 4,400 euros gross per month today

As in July, Dominique Faure confirms carrying out “a vast project to improve the conditions for exercising the mandate of local elected representative” in collaboration with David Lisnard, president of the Association of Mayors of France (AMF). According to the Minister, this work should allow an “evolution” of the compensation of local elected officials to “the height of (their) commitment”.

The minister mentions in particular a revaluation for the elected officials of municipalities of 3,500 to 100,000 inhabitants, whose maximum compensation varies from 2,200 euros to 4,400 euros gross per month, depending on the size of the communities. The remuneration of mayors of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants will also be discussed, because “they are full-time elected officials who have heavy responsibilities and manage a staff of several thousand people”, she justifies.

No amounts given yet

If the minister does not specify the levels of revaluation envisaged, she rules out the track of a personalized allowance intended to offset a loss of income linked to taking office as an elected official. “People are very well paid in the private sector and there is no reason to compensate for their previous salary,” she believes.

According to a Senate report published last July, more than 1,000 mayors elected in 2020, out of around 35,000, had resigned mid-term.
