The environment, the first concern of young people for Macron’s second five-year term

Will Emmanuel Macron retain his majority? Will the Nupes allow Mélenchon to obtain the post of Prime Minister he covets? Reconquest! will there be seats? The campaign for the legislative elections is in full swing and this news captivates young people. 84% of 18-30 year olds say they are interested in these elections, including 49% “very interested”, according to our latest study #MoiJeune*.

“They are very important, because they make it possible not to leave all the powers to the President of the Republic and to counterbalance his reforms”, affirms a respondent. “I hope it will be a revenge of the left on the presidential election and that we will have a cohabitation”, wishes another, obviously supporting the left. “They can influence the objectives of this new five-year term by emphasizing certain areas, such as ecology, for example”, aspires a third respondent.

Ecology in front of purchasing power

Ecology was already the priority for young people in 2019. It will remain so for years to come. To the question “What are the main issues on which you expect the president for this second five-year term? 56% of 18-30 year olds cite the environment, ahead of purchasing power (mentioned by 46% of young people), education (36%) and hospitals (34%).

Disillusioned with politicians, young people are nonetheless aware of the role of deputies, between “building and passing laws” and “carrying the voice of citizens”. It remains to be seen whether they will be more numerous than for the presidential election to move to elect them on June 12 and 19.
