“The Empress”: German series wins International Emmy

Great success for the German historical drama “The Empress”. The Netflix series won Best Drama Series at the 51st International Emmy Awards. On Monday evening, the production beat competition from South Korea (“Extraordinary Attorney Woo”), Argentina (“Yosi, the Regretful Spy”) and Great Britain (“The Devil’s Hour”). Showrunner Katharina Eyssen (40) and executive producer Jochen Laube (45) accepted the award at the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel Midtown in New York City.

Executive producers Fabian Maubach (43) and Scarlett Lacey as well as producer Annie Schilling and directors Katrin Gebbe (40) and Florian Cossen (44) were also on site. For only the second time in the history of the International Emmys, the award for non-US series productions, the prize in the main category went to Germany. Previously, only the series “Deutschland 83” in 2016 achieved this.

Three German nominations were not honored

However, three other German nominations went away empty-handed this year: the documentary “Nazi Hunters – Journey into Darkness” had to compete, as did the cultural program “Classics under the Swastika – The Maestro and the Cellist of Auschwitz” and the non-fiction program “Triff. .. Anne Frank” beat the competition.

The first season of “The Empress” with Devrim Lingnau (25) as Empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) and Philip Froissant (29) as Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916) in the main roles was released on September 29, 2022. The format was initially planned as a miniseries, but it was announced in November 2022 that a second season was being planned.

In September 2023, Netflix announced the start of filming for the new episodes, which will probably be broadcast next year. The first season stayed at the top of the Netflix charts for five weeks and ranked in the streaming provider’s top 10 in 88 countries worldwide.
