The Day Before was the most wanted game on Steam, is now closing a few days after release: “Financially failed”

Fntastic, the studio behind what was once the most wanted game on Steam, announced its closure just a few days after its release. MeinMMO tells you what happens next with The Day Before.

What game is it about? The Day Before was once supposed to be a survival MMO that wanted to please with impressive graphics and realistic zombies. The project became the most wanted game on Steam, but then everything went wrong:

  • The release was surprisingly postponed in May 2022
  • After the release of new trailers, players began to doubt the quality
  • Then The Day Before got into a legal dispute over its name and disappeared from Steam in the meantime

When the release finally came on December 7, 2023, not much of the original hype remained. Still, The Day Before immediately took off on Twitch, only to be torn apart on Steam. Now the developers are drawing conclusions.

For MeinMMO author Britta, The Day Before was even the great hope for survival in 2023; she recorded her experiences in a play report.

“We put blood, sweat and tears into the game for five years”

What do the developers say now? In a statement that appeared on X on December 11th, developer Fntastic announced the closure just a few days after launch. It is said that The Day Before had “failed financially” and now lacks the funds to continue.

The proceeds would now be used to pay off debts to the studio’s partners.

Fntastic insists it wasn’t a scam: it was their first big game and they put five years of blood, sweat and tears into it. They say they simply miscalculated.
