“The Crown” allegedly dedicates an entire episode to Princess Diana’s scandalous interview. That should cause displeasure in the royal family.
The Netflix series “The Crown” allegedly wants to dedicate an entire episode to Martin Bashir’s scandalous interview with Princess Diana. This is what “The Sun” reports. The decision of the series creators should cause displeasure in the British royal family. Diana’s son Prince William had asked that the 1995 BBC interview never be broadcast again.
An independent investigation came to the conclusion that the BBC journalist Bashir had sneaked the legendary interview with Princess Diana about forged documents. Diana had spoken openly about her depression and marital problems and criticized the royal institution.
Diana’s scandalous interview on “The Crown”
As “The Sun” now reports, Netflix is said to have spent millions on the episode in which the “Panorama” interview by Diana is the subject of discussion. According to the tabloid, an insider said that the episode is of central importance for the new season of “The Crown”: The creators of the series “see the interview as the key moment” of the fifth season.
The 1995 BBC Panorama interview was viewed by an estimated 22.8 million people. Diana spoke about her marital problems and eating disorders. She also confessed to an extramarital affair with James Hewitt. When Bashir asked Diana whether Camilla was a “factor” in the failure of the marriage with Prince Charles, she replied with the now famous sentence: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” (“Well, there were three of us in this marriage so it was a bit crowded.”)
A month after the interview aired, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II had sent letters to Charles and Diana advising them to divorce. The couple had split up in 1992. Due to the divorce, Diana is said to have lost the protection of the royal family, among other things.
New episodes will come in 2022
“The Crown” continues in November 2022. A few weeks ago, Netflix published a video with Imelda Staunton (65) on Twitter. The actress will play the Queen in season five. The fictional series is about the reign of Elizabeth II. After the fourth season of “The Crown” covered the period from 1979 to 1990, the new episodes are set to take place in the early to mid-1990s. The plot is supposed to end in 1997, the year in which Lady Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.
“The Crown” returns in season five with a new cast. In addition to Imelda Staunton as Queen, Jonathan Pryce will be there as Prince Philip. Lesley Manville plays Princess Margaret, Dominic West plays Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. Jonny Lee Miller will portray Prime Minister John Major.
