Optimism launches new Superchain feature for Layer 3 developers

Optimism is set to take its blockchain workload to the next level. By launching Layer 3 applications on top of the OP Stack.

On May 8th, the team Optimism said they are welcoming Layer 3 to Superchain where they will be able to build on the OP Stack and share revenue with Optimism Collective.

OP Stack is an open standards codebase that powers development on Superchain, but is “not limited to L2 chain Deployers and App Builders,” the team said first.Add that “It can also take advantage of the L3 ecosystem.”

The Optimism Superchain is a layer 2 network, known as OP Chains, that shares security, communication layers, and open source technology.

Layer 3 will have access to benefits such as eligibility for retro funding, airdrops, and developer funding programs. However, some features may be limited, such as interoperability.

Layer 3 protocols are built on top of Layer 2 to host specific decentralized applications. It provides improved solutions for scalability, performance, interoperability, customization, and cost.

Two key features coming to the OP Stack to support L3 creators — custom gas tokens and “Plasma Mode”.

custom gas token This is a highly requested feature in the final stages of development. It allows developers to use layer 2 tokens as native gas tokens for layer 3 protocols, reducing startup costs. This is because there is no need to perform expensive transactions by taking gas tokens from L1 to L2 and then into L3.

Plasma Mode It is an alternative to the data availability layer. This can reduce the fixed costs of running L3 compared to L2, where data availability refers to the ability of network participants to access and verify data stored on the blockchain.

The goal is to make Optimism Superchain more accessible to developers by offering Layer 3 features and functionality.

However, not everyone is convinced L3 is the way to scale Ethereum, as in April Polygon CEO Marc Boiron argued that a layer 3 network was unnecessary. This increases the security risks of Ethereum by capturing value from the network.

Rollup-based Optimism or OP Mainnet is the second largest Layer 2 network. with a total value of $6.76 billion. and has a market share of approximately 18% followL2beat’s information
