It is a must for tourism in Brittany. With its small port, its cobbled streets and its colorful timber-framed houses, Vannes is a favorite stopover for visitors. A boon for home owners, who can easily rent their apartment or house on well-known platforms such as Airbnb. But a nightmare for all those looking for accommodation.
To try to regulate the phenomenon, the city of Vannes should soon decide to impose a quota limiting the number of furnished tourist apartments per legal entity to two. According to West France, the proposal from Mayor David Robo (LR) should be debated in December at the municipal council. In fact, this should not prevent owners from “distributing” several assets among the different people in a household.
Half of undeclared housing
Two people should also be hired within Vannes agglomeration to try to better “monitor” this market. According to information from our colleagues, around 650 accommodations are declared as short-term rented. The mayor estimates that the reality would be around 1,500, in a city which has 35,000 housing units according to INSEE, including 15% so-called “secondary” residences. The municipality could also implement the tax on second homes.
