The Chaban-Delmas stadium listed as a historical monument

“Located right in the city centre, the historic stadium of the city of Bordeaux has no equivalent in France. The prefect of Gironde Fabienne Buccio announced on Tuesday the classification as historical monuments, of the Chaban-Delmas stadium in Bordeaux. “This new inscription consecrates its value and its interest with regard to history and architecture” adds the prefect.

At the origin of this ranking is an association, Préservons Lescure, which welcomed this announcement on social networks, stressing that “the third attempt will have been the right one. “This decision is made following the favorable opinion of the regional commission for heritage and architecture (CRPA) which met on May 19”, specifies the prefect.

Registration extends to adjacent sports facilities

Designed by architects Raoul Jourde and Jacques d’Welles, in the purest Art Deco style, the former Parc Lescure was inaugurated during the 1938 Football World Cup. After several changes over the years, it was renamed in 2001 Chaban-Delmas stadium in tribute to the former mayor of Bordeaux. After having welcomed footballers from the Girondins de Bordeaux, it is now the lair of UBB rugby players.

“The registration, instructed by the services of the regional management of cultural affairs (DRAC) Nouvelle-Aquitaine and supported by the City, relates to the stadium itself and extends to the adjacent sports facilities of the Lescure area, to the exclusion of the buildings of the sports center erected in the 1990s.” Any rehabilitation and transformation program for the Chaban-Delmas site must henceforth take into account the criteria which presided over this inscription.

The Chaban-Delmas complex had already been labeled as remarkable contemporary architecture since 2007.
