The carnival listed as a national intangible heritage

If, in several countries of the world, Mardi gras rhymes with carnival, in Nantes, the carnival parades generally take place in April. The next edition of the Nantes event will be no exception since it will take place from April 2 to 15. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the national recognition of this more than a century old carnival. The Ministry of Culture indeed announced at the end of last week its decision to enroll him in inventory of intangible cultural heritage national, reports the city of Nantes. This national inventory is intended to list and promote important French “social and festive practices”.

“This announcement is the recognition of a Nantes tradition almost a century and a half old. Relaunched by Aimé Delrue after the Second World War, it strongly marked the territory of Nantes. It is also and above all a great recognition for all the volunteers who put their passion and their know-how at the service of the carnival”, rejoices Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes.

European capital of carnivals

Composed of thematic floats, big heads, dancers and musicians, the carnival of Nantes is free to enter. It attracts an average of 50,000 spectators for its day parade (opening) and as many for its night parade (closing). A children’s ball is also offered between the two.

The 2023 edition promises to be special since Nantes has also been named European capital of carnivals for this year.
