The recovered bodies were identified as those of two men aged 35 and 26, from Mexico and Guatemala, who were part of the team of workers present on the roadway of the Francis Scott Key Bridge at the time of the accident .
Victims who came from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras
A total of eight people fell into the water in the Patapsco River after the bridge collapsed and was hit by a container ship on Tuesday. Two of them were quickly recovered, one unharmed and the other seriously injured. The eight people were all part of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge at the time of the tragedy. Officials said they were from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
The bodies of four of them, now all presumed dead, have still not been found, authorities added. Due to the amount of concrete and debris falling into the water, “divers are no longer able to make their way safely” toward “what we believe to be the trapped vehicles,” said Roland Butler, of the Maryland police, reports CBS News.
Rescuers will therefore seek to remove the structure from the water to facilitate access for divers, he said.
