The benefit auction of the Joy House of Art in Munich – Munich

Autumn is currently working hard and shining in the most wonderful colors. A steep template for the benefit auction of the Friends of the House of Art. Whether this, and above all the auction result, can shine just as powerfully, that will turn out on this Thursday evening. In any case, the title of the event “Amid Autumn Glow” for the benefit of the Haus der Kunst Foundation and the artistic program already provides the appropriate motto.

At the center of this autumn glow are more than 50 works of art as well as some special events, some of which can be auctioned online, some live on site. All works are in Christie’s online catalog visible. Here, bids can be placed on the corresponding lots, and in the online-only auction (which runs until the evening of October 29th), huge amounts can be presented. Big names are among the consigning artists: Theaster Gates, Phyllida Barlow, Heidi Bucher, Kapwani Kiwanga, Thomas Ruff, Laure Prouvost, Tobias Zielony, Michaela Eichwald, Haegue Yang, Erwin Olaf, Leonor Antunes, Anri Sala, Franz Erhard Walther, Hans Op de Beeck or Michaela Melián. National and international artists as well as galleries and collectors close to Haus der Kunst have submitted works for the benefit auction, at which Dirk Boll from Christie’s will swing the hammer on Thursday evening during the live auction.

The work with the currently most expensive starting price is a ceramic by the American concept artist Theaster Gates, which is to change hands for at least 110,000 euros. The monumental artwork by Jacolby Satterwhite “Design for Drug Stores” is cheaper. It is called for 15,650 euros. Satterwhite’s wild cosms are populated by a multitude of avatars that have their origins in music videos and video games, queer themes and African rites. “Design for Drug Stores” will also be on public display from October 28th in the second part of the multi-media installation Satterwhites shown in the central hall. In addition to the top lots, there are also works of art on offer that are already available for less than 1000 euros – but, according to the wishes of the Haus der Kunst Freunde, should of course produce as many as possible.

After all, it is important to keep the Haus der Kunst, which has been in need of renovation for a long time and of which the friends are co-partners, and to support the innovative exhibition program of the artistic director Andrea Lissoni. He is proving week after week that his promises at the beginning of his term in office were not empty. At that time, he announced that, in addition to long-running exhibition presentations, he would attract new and, above all, younger audiences to the exhibition temple at the English Garden through rapidly changing performances, artist talks and musical and performative series. Anyone who visits there often notices: Lissoni does it pretty well. The shop is buzzing more and more.

In addition to works of art, you can also buy some special events at the benefit auction in the Haus der Kunst. These include exclusive tours of collections and exhibitions, but also, for example, a large family portrait photo session with the photo artist Frank Wurzer, an exclusive dinner with a surprise guest in the penthouse of Euroboden boss Stefan Höglmaier and an invitation from Silvia Langen, the chairman of the Friends of the House of Art, in one of the oldest Bavarian bowling alleys with veal sausage breakfast – so there is also something socially entertaining to be had with the auction lots.

And the works of art not only include classic media such as painting, graphics, sculpture or photography. For example, the work “destroyed5c9039” by Station Rose is offered, which was created in the second lockdown. An analog work whose Augmented Reality (AR) can be activated with the aid of the Artivive app, so that different levels jump out of the image into digital space and the abstract shapes flow into one another. This visual roller coaster ride in the AR is accompanied by music by Gary Danner.

Auction: Unmistakable invitation: Santiago Reyes' work "Untitled (move your asses)", a t-shirt that was created during one of his performances.

The work of Santiago Reyes, on the other hand, is analog from front to back. The artist, who comes from Ecuador, shows the physical trace of sweat in his performances. Works by Santiago Reyes can currently be seen in the “Sweat” exhibition at Haus der Kunst. He submitted the work “move your asses” for auction. A slogan that in this specific case is aimed at a different part of the body: the hands that are supposed to click online or go up at the live auction.
