Margot Friedländer still remembers how she got into the story. In the early noughties, Friedländer was taking a creative writing class at the 92nd Street Y Jewish cultural center in New York to distract himself from her husband’s death. There she sat among older women who wrote about their pets or about their sons who didn’t call. Friedländer thought back and forth, at some point the course instructor said: You have to remember something! It was then that she realized how much she remembers. And that she finally had to tell about it.
