This improvement will allow the AP-HP to generally stabilize or even very slightly increase its number of nurses over the year. “We think we can “re-open” 400 full hospitalization beds”, 300 for the medical/surgical/obstetrics part, and 100 for follow-up care and psychiatry.
The situation remains very fragile
The AP-HP, which has some 18,000 beds, lost around 200 beds in the first half. “It is a positive signal”, according to Nicolas Revel, but “there are downsides because we remain in difficulty (recruitment) in certain professions, such as radio technicians, operating room nurses or midwives (…) . We seem to have the beginnings of something, but it will be long, it remains fragile.”
Hospitals are, overall, facing departures of caregivers and significant recruitment difficulties, and the government is trying to reverse the trend by increasing salaries. After the Ségur de la Santé measures in 2020, Elisabeth Borne announced in August more than a billion euros in increases, particularly for night and Sunday work.
Hospitals, for their part, are trying to improve their organization to be more attractive. The AP-HP, for example, tries to offer a 4-day week, with a working time of 8 hours 45 minutes per day. “Out of 72 services to which we offered something resembling a four-day week, around 50 adopted it,” says Nicolas Revel.
